UL1051 UL1028 UL1032 UL1283 UL1284 cable standard differences and applications

UL certification standards
UL standards cover almost all types of products and are the basis for identifying product quality. UL has published more than 500 standards, 70% of which have been adopted as American national standards by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

  1. Structure of UL standards
    Generally speaking, the structure of UL standards can be roughly divided into:
    (1) The scope of products covered by the standards;
    (2) Product structural requirements;
    (3) Requirements for raw materials used in products;
    (4) Requirements for components used in products;
    (5) UL laboratory requirements and test methods for sample testing instruments;
    (6) Requirements and test methods for manufacturer’s factory test equipment;
    (7) Product marking and instruction manual requirements.
  2. Introduction to UL standards (UL1051/UL1028/UL1032/UL1283/UL1284):
    UL 1051: Thermistors
    Scope of application: This standard applies to thermistors with a rated voltage not exceeding 600V, including negative temperature coefficient (NTC) and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors.
    Main content: Thermistors are electronic components that change their resistance value according to temperature changes. UL 1051 specifies performance test methods for these devices under different conditions, including but not limited to environmental stress tests (such as temperature cycling), electrical characteristics tests (such as insulation resistance and dielectric strength), mechanical properties tests (such as vibration and shock), etc.
    Application scenarios: Widely used in temperature measurement, control circuits, overheating protection and other fields.

UL 1028: Control devices – manual control switches
Scope of application: UL 1028 involves manually operated control switches, such as switches used in household appliances.
Main content: Including but not limited to the operating force, life test, contact resistance and safety considerations of the switch, aiming to ensure that users will not encounter electrical hazards or other safety hazards during normal use.
Application scenarios: Manual control switches suitable for household appliances, industrial control systems and other occasions.

UL 1032: Control Devices – Temperature Indicating Controllers
Scope of application: This standard is for controllers used to adjust temperature, such as thermostats.
Main content: It specifies a series of electrical and mechanical performance requirements that temperature controllers must meet to ensure that they can accurately control temperature under the expected working environment and have sufficient safety.
Application scenarios: Used in heating systems, air conditioning systems and other applications requiring precise temperature control.

UL 1283: Electromagnetic Interference Filters
Scope of application: UL 1283 is a standard for unshielded twisted pair (UTP). UL 1283 is applicable to electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters installed or connected to 1,000 V or lower potential circuits, 50 – 60 Hz or up to 1,500 Vdc.
Main content: These requirements cover filters used to attenuate unwanted RF signals (such as noise or interference) generated by electromagnetic sources. Filters consist of capacitors and inductors used alone or in combination with each other, and can be equipped with resistors. In addition, requirements for facility filters, wired connection filters, and direct plug-in filters are included.
Application scenarios: Commonly used for power line filtering, signal line filtering, and other scenarios where electromagnetic radiation and interference need to be reduced.

UL 1284: Parallel cable communication equipment
Scope of application: UL 1284 covers shielded twisted pair (STP). UL 1284 is a standard for parallel cable communication equipment, which is commonly used for data transmission between computers and other electronic devices.
Main content: It defines the safety and compatibility requirements of such equipment, including electrical isolation, anti-interference ability, and other key performance indicators to ensure that data transmission between devices is both efficient and reliable.
Application scenarios: Mainly used for data exchange between computers and their peripherals. Although serial communication (such as USB, HDMI, etc.) is more popular now, parallel cable communication still has its unique value in some specific cases.

TST CABLES reminds users: Please note that each UL cable standard has detailed specifications and technical requirements, and what we provide here is just an overview. If you need more detailed information, it is recommended to consult the specific UL standard documents or visit the TST CABLES official website to obtain the latest standard version and related materials and the latest information.

For cable manufacturer TST CABLES, it is very important to strictly follow these standards, because they not only help to ensure product quality, but also improve user confidence and promote product entry into the international market. At the same time, as technology advances and market demand changes, these standards will also be regularly updated to reflect the latest technology and best practices. Therefore, TST CABLES’s continued attention to the development of relevant standards is also a key factor in maintaining competitiveness. If you need more detailed guidance or the latest standard information, please consult TST CABLES cable engineers directly or consult UL’s latest standard documents.
